btnBack.pngVictoria KickhamAfter slowing in July, the Global Purchasing Index rises more than 2 points in August, as buyers of electronic components point to better business conditions.

Global Purchasing’s monthly business confidence index rose 2.3% in August to 116.9, indicating continued optimism among purchasing managers and other buyers of electronic components. The August level approaches June’s record high of 117.5 and represents an increase over July’s slight dip to 115.5. btnBack.pngJeff RayEnd-of-life (EOL) product announcements are a ritual of the electronics industry. When newer, smaller and faster are the watchwords of new products, at some point the older, slower, larger pieces fall by the wayside, are rendered obsolete and bypassed by newer technology. It’s a fact of life and we’ve become accustom to it. So when Panasonic released the announcement stating they were exiting the aluminum snap-in capacitor business, it may have been overlooked by many in the industry. But, this is one EOL announcement to pay attention to.

Panasonic has manufactured excellent snap-in capacitors for years, they have been some of the most high-performance components in this product category....Continue Reading >>

btnBack.pngJim CarboneThe global market for discrete semiconductors will grow 3-4 percent per year through 2016 although there will be price erosion, according to chipmakers.

Ron Clifford, senior director regional marketing Americas for Vishay Semiconductors, noted that power transistors are the largest part of the discretes market and that World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) forecasts that power transistor sales growth will be slightly stronger than the overall discretes market.

However, he felt growth may not be as strong for power transistors as WSTS forecasts because of above average price erosion,...Continue Reading >>

btnBack.pngMichael KnightIn simple terms, deflation is a decrease in the general price level of goods and services, a trend that increases the real value of money over time. In contrast, inflation is a sustained increase in general price levels over a period of time, a trend which reduces the real value of money. Even more simply put, during a deflationary period one is able to buy more for their money, and during an inflationary period, less.

For those of us making a living manufacturing and/or selling passive components – capacitors, resistors, inductors, ferrites, etc. – we well know how deflation works. While the norm in the world around us is an increase in the prices of the things we buy, the price of the things we sell for a living trends the opposite direction....Continue Reading >>
